Commendable results at Auckland Secondary Schools Team Racing Championships

Posted on April 18, 2024

Sixteen Macleans College students competed in the Auckland Secondary Schools Teams Racing Championships, held at the Royal Akarana Yacht Club from 20 - 22 March.

There was hope that the relatively young Macleans College teams would retain their gold fleet position, which they worked so hard to achieve in 2023. As a result of disciplined and dedicated training and with three days of light, unstable winds which made for long days on the water, both teams finished with commendable results.

The Macleans College Blue team

Anna Waymouth (Snell House), Josh Hope (Snell), James Anderson (Te Kanawa), Martina Beavis (Kupe) Tim Townend (Te Kanawa), Connor Smith (Rutherford) and Zara Cooper (Kupe).

Finished third in the silver fleet.

The Macleans College Red team

James Blyth (Kupe), Andre Teodorescu (Hillary), Pedro Vantacich (Batten), Rhys Money (Hillary), Madi Russell (Snell), Callum Noyer (Mansfield) and Tyler Marsh (Mansfield).

Finished eighth overall in the gold fleet.

The Macleans College sailors can be proud of these strong results. They take away many learnings from facing tough competition from 21 schools and coming against some well-decorated sailors.

Thank you to Chris Marsh (Mansfield House 2000 - 2004) for his support over the three-day event. Chris’s knowledge and assistance with the teams on and off the water has been critical to their success and is highly appreciated.

Good luck to Madi Russell, Anna Waymouth and Callum Noyer who are competing in the yachting New Zealand youth trials over the school holidays.
