Challenge course students complete Waitakere Ranges overnight hike

The Macleans College Year 11 Challenge course students recently undertook an overnight hike to the beautiful and rugged Pararaha Valley, located in Auckland’s Waitakere Ranges.

The adventure began on the remote beach of Whatipu. This area is a scientific reserve, with spectacular coastal dunes and wetlands. The students hiked up steep tracks to enjoy breathtaking views of the Manukau Harbour.

Carrying tents, clothing, emergency gear, food and water they followed the ridgeline on the first day, making camp in the muddy but stunning campsite. The temperature dropped overnight, however, this didn't dampen the students’ spirits.

On the second day the group walked out of the valley via the beach route, completing a gruelling ten kilometres of hiking through sand dunes and into headwinds. The students were feeling the strain of the challenge towards the end and were pleased once they arrived back at the Whatipu carpark. Despite tight muscles and sore shoulders, they successfully completed the hike and created lifelong memories along the way.

The Macleans College Challenge course is designed to develop well-rounded young men who fully participate in school life and who realise their full potential. The course challenges boys to be the best they can be across a number of areas, particularly the outdoors. The course helps develop skills that can be used in many aspects of school and personal life - such as determination, courage, resilience and organisation.
