Business Studies students experience the spooky side of business

From the creepy clown to the so-sad two-headed babies, the Year 12 Business Studies visit to Spookers was a trip to remember.
Students had the “pleasure” of negotiating their way through the darkness and claustrophobia of “Disturbia”, a 3-D maze filled with twists and turns and unpleasant surprises. This was followed by a tour of the Haunted House, a place of freakish creativity designed to shock and scare. It was fascinating.
Students soon discovered, there is so much more to the venue than simple “jump-scares” and hair-raising entertainment. Spookers is a business and requires all the same planning, controls and management as any other business.
The purpose of the visit was to learn about the motivation practices of Spookers for an upcoming internal assessment. With a staff of nearly 150 casual actors from diverse walks of life, it can be challenging to create a cohesive workplace culture of creativity and enthusiasm mixed with discipline and focus.
Spookers uses a wide range of rewards and incentives, together with training and team-building to keep their actors engaged and motivated to provide a quality visitor experience night after night. The work can be demanding, but the ultimate reward for the actors is the joy of transforming, letting loose their personality and having fun entertaining people for the night. What could be more satisfying than that?
