Brilliant results at Auckland Volleyball Championships
Posted on March 23, 2021
Last week the Premier boys and girls competed at the Auckland Senior Volleyball Championships at the Pulman Arena located in Takanini, South Auckland.
This is the biggest tournament that College Sport runs with over forty boys and forty girls teams in three divisions played on 12 courts over three days.
The Macleans College teams are almost entirely Year 11 and 12 and played in Division two with the focus being on “next year”. Before the tournament the teams were undefeated, both winning the Eastern Zone easily.
The boys had a brilliant tournament winning all of their games in pool play 2-0 to make the quarterfinal where they beat Saint Kentigern College in one of their best games this year. They then played Mt Albert Grammar School in the semi-final losing a very close game. This left the team playing off for 3rd and 4th where they beat Hillary College fairly comfortably. The team was very well captained by Deputy Head Boy, Levi De Jong (Snell House), and Noah Rooke (Kupe) was one of the stand out players.
The girls won two of their three pool matches and actually had match point in the game they lost to Kelston Girls’ College. They also reached the quarterfinals but lost to Mt Albert Grammar School in a game that was very close 25-27, 23-25. They then won their next game to eventually finish 6th. They all played well with Gemma Richards (Kupe) and Hana Rose (Year 11 Hillary) leading by example. This team was coached extremely well by an ex-pupil Randy Jiang (Te Kanawa 2014 – 2018) and managed and looked after by Ms Rose.
The Auckland Volleyball Championships proved to be a very pleasurable three days for all of the teams and coaches.
