Big Sing Finale
Posted on September 04, 2017
For the first time in the school’s history, the Macleans College Music Department had two premier choirs selected for the finale stages of the Big Sing, held recently at Auckland’s Aotea Centre.
The Macleans College Chorale and Cantabile, the premier girls’ choir, presented two recital programmes containing a mixture of original chorale music, New Zealand works and arrangements.
Particular highlights from M.C.C were performances of Z Randal Stroope’s I Am Not Yours, Kia Kaha - a work based on a Maori text commissioned by Macleans College for 2017 from composer Kate Bell and Stephen Hatfield’s upbeat Dubulah complete with intense choreography.
Cantabile presented a programme featuring an eclectic mix of accompaniments, displaying the talents of Danielle Tweedale of Rutherford House (Piano), Lynn Han of Te Kanawa House (Violin), Antonia Chan of Mansfield House (Cello), Janice Ho of Te Kanawa House (Drums) and Veda Xue of Rutherford House (Percussion).
An impromptu concert at the Auckland Art Gallery delighted members of the public on Friday afternoon before the choirs returned to the Aotea Centre for the gala concert and awards evening where both choirs were presented with Bronze awards.
