Batten House 20th Anniversary
Posted on June 29, 2018
Tuesday 12 June marked the twentieth anniversary of Batten House, the sixth house opened at Macleans College.
A ceremony took place to celebrate this which was attended by former House Leaders including Mrs Furlong, Mrs Thompson, Mrs Dorey, Mr Knight and Mrs Marnewick. Unfortunately the foundation House Leader, Mrs Figgins could not attend but sent her apologies and best wishes. Foundation staff also attended.
The highlight was the unveiling of a new House Coat of Arms made by the Batten Art Club. There was also a performance by the Medium House Choir, and a skit by Year 9 students on the life of Jean Batten. The house was also awarded a new motto of ‘Per Aspera Ad Astra’ - Through Hardships to the Stars.
Batten House was opened in 1998 by the Hon. Maurice Williamson, former MP for Pakuranga. The foundation roll comprised of students from Forms Three to Six. The school’s Peer Support programme was established following Year 9 camp. The ethos of the house of kindness, sympathy and service, is embodied in its support of the house charity, The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Trust.
