On Sunday 27 August, ten Macleans College badminton players flew to Wellington to take part in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Badminton Championships, held at Te Rauparaha Arena in Porirua.
The competition started on Monday and a total of twelve games were played each day.
The girls’ team of Josephine Zhao (captain) (Mansfield House), Rosie Yang (Kupe), Melody Cai (Kupe) and Mia Xu (Mansfield) went unbeaten. They played Wellington High School in the finals and continued their unbeaten streak taking home the cup for the girl’s first division. This is their second year of winning the competition.
The boys’ team of Eric Lu (captain) (Rutherford), Wesley Lau (Kupe), Joseph Wu (Te Kanawa), Kylin Li (Rutherford), Bryan Shi (Hillary) and Billy Li (Snell) had a few challenging games. They played in the finals to determine third or fourth place against King’s College and managed to beat them taking third place in the first division for the boys.
The teams showed great sportsmanship among their own teammates and competing schools, always encouraging each other from the sideline and on court. Everyone had an enjoyable week together and are aiming to bring home two first place titles next year.
