Auckland Young Sportsperson of the Year Awards

Four Macleans College students won awards in their respective sports at the College Sport Auckland Young Person of the Year Awards held last week at Eden Park.
Students who were nominated included Sally Fu (Kupe House) in Badminton, Zhi Ying Cheng (Te Kanawa) in Table Tennis, Theo Quax (Kupe) in Distance Running, Jimmy Zheng (Hillary) in Golf, and Matthew Wilson (Kupe) and George Furniss (Batten) in Mountain Biking.
The following students were named the best in their sport.
Sally Fu (Badminton)
Sally’s achievements this year include:
- Member of the Macleans College Premier Girls’ Badminton team that won gold at nationals this year
- NZ U19 Junior Team Champs member
- Counties Manukau U19 winner
- Auckland Open Champs - Women's Singles winner
- NZ Senior National Champion - Women's Singles winner
- Oceania Junior Singles and Doubles winner
- NZ U19 Women’s Singles and Doubles winner
- Member of the 2017 Sudirman Cup Team (Gold Coast)
- Member of the 2017 World Junior Championship (Indonesia)
- Junior Oceania Championships - Girls’ Singles winner - Girls’ Doubles winner - NZ team winning the Oceania Junior Championships
- JAYA RAYA Junior Grand Prix (Indonesia) - Girls’ Singles quarterfinalist
- Australian Junior International - Girls’ Singles quarterfinalist
- Junior World Ranking - #31 Girls’ Singles
- World Ranking - #250 Women's Singles
Zhi Ying Cheng (Table Tennis)
Zhi Ying’s achievements this year include:
- 3rd in Auckland Team Tournament
- 2nd in U19 teams and U19 singles at Nationals this year
- Oceania Junior Championships (Fiji, Suva)
- 3rd in U18 Girls’ Singles
- 2nd in U18 Girls’ Teams
- 3rd in U18 Girls’ Doubles - North Island Championships
- 3rd in Open Women’s
- 1st in U21 Girls’ - Auckland Summer Open
- 1st in U18 Girls Singles
- 3rd in Open Women’s
- 2nd in Open Mixed Doubles - Auckland Open
- 3rd in Open Women’s
- 1st in U18 Girls’
- 1st in Open Mixed Doubles - Counties Manukau Open – 1st in U21 Girls’
- 2018 Oceania Cup qualifier
- Waikato Open – 2nd in Open Women’s

Theo Quax (Distance Running)
Theo’s achievements this year include:
- 1st in Eastern Zone Cross Country
- 2nd at Auckland Cross Country Championship
- 1st in the Auckland Road Race Championship (set course record)
- 5th at NZ Secondary Schools Cross Country Championship
- Men’s U-20 Road Race winner
- 2nd at Australian Nationals
- 1st in 1500m U20 NZ
- U20 Auckland
- 1st in 1500m
- 1st in 800m
- 1st in 3000m - Auckland Athletics Championship
- 1st in 800m
- 1st in 1500m - 5th in U20 National Cross Country for club
- Member of U20 Auckland Team for Road - 1st at Nationals
- U20 Auckland Cross Country Team - 1st at Nationals
- U20 Auckland 4x400m Team - 2nd at Nationals
George Furniss (Mountain Biking)
George’s achievements this year include:
- 1st Overall and in U19 - Summer Cup - Mid Course
- 1st in U19 Crater's Course
- 1st in U19 Winter Series
- 3rd Overall - Winter Series - Long Course
- 1st at Auckland Secondary Schools Series - U19 category
Sally Fu and Zhi Ying Cheng were also nominated for the overall Sportswoman of the Year award.
