Auckland Writers Festival provides inspiration to budding authors
Posted on June 21, 2023
Twenty students from the Macleans College Writer’s Club attended the Auckland Writers Festival last month.
The day was spent attending seminars held by authors such as Jason Reynolds, Chloe Gong and Chris Tse, and attending a workshop of their choice. The Macleans College students found their chosen events highly inspiring. They enjoyed being able to hear the stories, journeys and wisdoms of these authors, the trials and tribulations that brought them to where they are, and experience what writing means to them. This experience opened the student’s eyes to the endless possibilities that writing can bring.
The highlight of the day for Writer’s Club member Ivy Feng (Rutherford House) was the Jason Reynold’s seminar. Ivy explained that he had a comforting way of delivering his story, even with the heavier topics. She really liked his analogy with the injured leg, about how something can heal, but it won’t ever be the same again.
The Writer’s Club students took the opportunity to purchase books and obtain autographs from their favourite authors. They all found the day extremely encouraging and inspiring, and most importantly fun.
Every year this festival stages over 200 public events, gathering together hundreds of the world’s best writers and thinkers to celebrate the world of books and ideas. The 2023 event attracted over 60,000 attendees.
