Golfing success at Auckland Secondary Schools Stroke Play Championships

Fifteen Macleans College students participated in the annual 36 hole Golf Stroke Play Championships organised by College Sport.

This competition was held over two days. Day one of the competition was played at Pukekohe Golf course and day two was played at Redwood Golf Course. A record field of 96 boys and 36 girls from secondary schools across Auckland participated in this tournament.

Year 11 student Cherry Lee (Batten House) was the best golfer for Macleans College. She finished third in the girls’ division, only two strokes behind the second-place getter.

Year 11 students Samuel Ding (Upham) and Archie Thompson (Batten) finished seventh and ninth respectively in the boys’ division.

The Macleans College premier golf team finished third equal in the teams’ competition. The team consisted of Cherry Lee, Lucia Lee (Hillary), Samuel Ding and Paul Horyna (Mansfield). The team has gained entry to play in the New Zealand Secondary Schools National tournament held in New Plymouth at the end of August.

Other notable achievements by Macleans College golfers:

    • Cherry Lee won the Northland Stroke Play Championship, played at Sherwood Golf Club in February.

    • Samuel Ding won the Auckland Under 16 Boys tournament held in December 2023.
