Posted on July 05, 2024
Macleans College fencers continued their strong form, achieving some top results at the Auckland Secondary Schools Sabre Teams competition.
The sabre is one of three disciplines of modern fencing. The sabre is a weapon for thrusting and cutting with both the cutting edge and the back of the blade.
Macleans College entered a record number of teams; evidence of the growing popularity of fencing at the college. This year the competition was held at Te Pai Event Centre in Henderson.
Teams were placed in three different pools, each consisting of fencers with similar levels of experience.
In the Ladies’ Sabre division, Macleans College entered two relatively inexperienced teams. The A team, including Gisele Lau (Te Kanawa House), Clare Wang (Mansfield) and Yunmin Lee (Rutherford), were narrowly beaten 45-43, claiming a bronze medal in a closely fought contest against Epsom Girls’ Grammar School. The B team members were Hope Zhang (Rutherford), Cecilia Ma (Mansfield) and Bailey Young (Upham).
The three Men’s Sabre teams fared well in competition. The A team, including Matteo Carter (Upham), Tianzexi Liu (Snell), Ken Zhong (Hillary) and Allan Zhao (Kupe), finished with a silver medal, being beaten by Auckland Grammar School 45-40. Gold medals were won by the B team which included Harry Zhou (Upham), Maxwell Chen (Upham), Daniel Yuan (Batten) and Joseph Chan (Mansfield) as well as the C team which included Hank He (Rutherford), Kyan Mar (Hillary), Jay Hwang (Mansfield) and Matt Wang (Mansfield).
Well done to all fencers who participated in the recent competitions. Apart from great results, the enthusiasm and team collaboration have done the school proud.
