Gold and silver medals achieved at Auckland Secondary Schools Men’s Foil competition

Posted on June 19, 2024

A group of student fencers recently represented Macleans College at the Auckland Secondary Schools Men’s Foil Teams’ competition.

This competition served as an excellent barometer to gauge what level the Macleans College fencers are competing at. It was also used to make selections for regional teams competing in the National Secondary School competitions in August.

This year marked a change in format from direct elimination to pools. Teams were placed in three different pools each consisting of four teams of similar experience. Macleans College was represented by a team in each of these three pools with fencers bringing home medals in each pool:

Pool A, the Premiere Men’s team: captain Eddy Zheng (Snell House), Craig Chong (Upham), Larry Lin (Batten) and Matt Wang (Mansfield) won gold.

Pool B: captain Stacy Chong (Snell), Daniel Farrelly-Grace (Mansfield), Maxwell Chen (Upham) and Finn Wai-Poi (Rutherford) won silver.

Pool C: captain Hank He (Rutherford), Will Chen (Snell), David Guan (Upham) and Anthony Chen (Rutherford) won silver. This was a particularly impressive achievement as many of these students are new to fencing and still gaining experience.

Congratulations to the Macleans College fencers on their sterling results.
