Auckland Secondary Schools Stroke Play Day 2

Posted on August 24, 2018

On Monday 20 August five students from Macleans College took part in the second day of the Auckland Secondary Schools Stroke Play at the Waitemata Golf Course.

Two of the school’s top golfers – Jimmy Zheng (Hillary House) and Vivian Lu (Batten) were unavailable for the competition due to national duties. They are representing New Zealand in New Caledonia.  Jarrod Millar (Mansfield) had an ankle injury and ruled himself out of the tournament.

The 2017 Boys’ Champion, Connor Barker (Mansfield), was only one stroke behind the leader going into the second day of the competition. In the meantime, Oscar Cowley-Andrea (Te Kanawa) was leading the field in the net division.

The course was very damp and muddy due to rain and it proved very challenging for most golfers. The greens were slow and very difficult to read. Quite a few golfers ended up with more than two putts.

Connor posted the best score for the school but this was not enough for him to win the gross division. Oscar repeated his day one performance to come third in the net division with a net score of 70. Other gross scores were: Henry Wang (Batten) 75, Tremain Croad (Upham) 86, and Oliver Selley (Te Kanawa) 89.

The team is currently preparing for the Secondary Schools National Finals to be held in Palmerston North in early September. This is a 36 hole competition. The team will then compete in the age group final over a three day period.
