Art Design and Photography students capture Waitawa Regional Park

Posted on March 15, 2021

On Wednesday 10 March, Year 11 Art Design and Photography students travelled south to Waitawa Regional Park, located at Kawakawa Bay to explore the rich history of the land and tangata whenua.

Waitawa Regional Park was a significant area during Maori occupation; the park was on the boundary line of two different tribes (Ngāti Paoa and Ngāti Kohua) which utilised its natural features to settle there. The area has multiple archaeological sites and a long history of human occupation. As the land was steep and had high points, it was well suited for setting up defensive posts and pa to protect the tribes. During the late 1900’s Waitawa Regional Park was an important staple in the explosives business and was a site for making and storing explosives.

The students were armed with cameras and tripods and spent the balmy Auckland day capturing photographs of the stunning landscape and experimenting with photography to gather their own resources for the photography and design work in the year ahead.

Students will use their photography taken on the trip in Adobe Photoshop and InDesign to create their own portfolio of work.
