A new look to the annual Gala Concert
Posted on August 09, 2024
The annual Macleans College Gala Concert was held last week at the impressive ASB Waterfront Theatre.
A near capacity audience were treated to the very best of Macleans College Performing Arts talents. The evening opened with an energetic and appropriately dramatic Kapa Haka.
A complete change of pace followed, with the student-led Chamber Orchestra performing works by Greig and Hisaishi. A set of popular songs arranged for barbershop was delivered by Macappella under Melody Lowe’s careful direction, then two scenes from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the ever popular Saxy Men (saxophone quartet) and the first half finale a finely choreographed dance performance from this year’s Showquest dance team.
Dramatic programme music opened the second half with the Concert Band’s performance of Reineke’s Goddess of Fire. The Chorale then took centre stage on their new choral risers under the direction of Mrs McNabb, fresh from their World Choir Games success. The Symphony Orchestra directed by Dr Miles, provided the last set of the evening with some traditional classical music by Saint-Saens, together with computer game music from Advent Rising. A grand finale of Symphony Orchestra and Chorale combined closed out the evening, with John Williams’ Hymn to the Fallen (from the movie Saving Private Ryan) and What a Wonderful World.
The first venture to the ASB Waterfront Theatre was an amazing experience for staff, students and audience alike. The contextual warmth and intimacy of the performance space was a real highlight, as was the significantly increased technical production values. Sincere thanks to the many community sponsors that contributed to making the Gala Concert possible.
