A near perfect score for Chamber Orchestra
Posted on August 19, 2022
Last week five Macleans College instrumental groups (Symphonic Band, Concert Bands, Sinfonietta, Chamber Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra) took to the stage at the annual KBB Music Festival, held at Holy Trinity Cathedral Parnell.
Amongst the top awards, the Macleans College Chamber Orchestra scored 99/100 and won the special award for best performance of a classical work for their performance of Tchaikovsky’s String Serenade. The Chamber and Symphony Orchestras were both invited to perform at their respective Gala Concerts, an event held to showcase the top four ensembles in each category. Among other works, the Symphony Orchestra presented a stunning arrangement by Matt Riley of the traditional hymn tune Amazing Grace, performed by soloist and concertmaster, Lorna Zhang (Mansfield House).
New to the festival this year, a “Big Play In” event was held to provide an honours group experience for developing musicians. The Symphonic Band joined with over 200 musicians to perform Brian Balmages Falcon Fanfare in a performance conducted by adjudicator Vincent Hardaker.
Several Macleans College students were also selected for the Honours Concert Bands and Chamber Orchestra who gave a public performance on Friday evening under the batons of Harmon Van Hoorne and Michael Joel.
