Sino-Macleans Joint Venture
Macleans College and the Jiangsu Foreign Language School in Suzhou, China, have agreed to a joint venture.
The joint venture is known as the 2 + 1 Co-Operation Agreement and follows in-depth discussions between the then Principal of Macleans College, Mr Byron Bentley, and the Principal of Jiangsu School, Mr Zhou Bin in 2010.
The venture means that students in a specially formed international class at Jiangsu School will study their normal subject lessons in the Chinese education framework for two years. In addition, these students will receive tuition in English and a Science subject using the Cambridge Assessment International Education syllabus at IGCSE and AS levels. (IGCSE International General Certificate of Secondary Education; AS means A Level Subsidiary and this is the first year of the two year A Level course).
The Jiangsu students will then come to Macleans College for their final year. The expectation is that the students will then apply to Auckland University or other universities in New Zealand or around the world.
Macleans College teachers will be invited to visit the Jiangsu School for a limited time to deliver training and aspects of the CIE programmes. Jiangsu, in return, will send teachers to Macleans College.
An Enhanced English programme will be available on the Macleans College web site for Jiangsu students to access to develop their English writing and speaking ability. In addition, another programme, Vital English, is located on the homepage of the Macleans College web site. This involves testing the students’ English ability so they can be placed at the correct level of revision. Once a particular level has been satisfactorily completed, the student can move to a higher level.
The aim is to provide Jiangsu students with every opportunity to enter main-stream classes when they arrive at Macleans College. The aim is also for students to obtain their literacy and numeracy requirements so they can achieve University Entrance.
