Hi, my name is Jonathan and I am from Germany.
One and a half years ago I went up to my parents asking if I could go to New Zealand to spend a year abroad. Their first reaction was NO. They didn’t want to see their son head off into the unknown. So, I had some convincing to do.
I told them about all the incredible places you can visit, like Queenstown, Wellington and the stunning landscapes of Fiordland National Park and the Bay of Islands. But what really convinced them was the learning experience this year could provide. I told them about the amazing learning opportunities, the chance to experience a new culture, and how it would help me become more independent and responsible.
Eventually my parents agreed and the planning started. The actual organisation was quite easy and within a month most of the trip was planned. I was a plane ride away from having a completely new life.
When I first arrived here, the thought of being away from home for a whole year was quite daunting, but also filled with anticipation. My focus was on the iconic landscapes and must-see tourist spots, but soon I discovered that the best part of New Zealand lay beyond its stunning scenery. It was in the everyday experiences and the warmth of the people I encountered along the way, that I truly found the best part of this country.
Every day brought new adventures, from trying, but failing to find kiwi birds, to skiing in Queenstown or playing football with friends. These moments became cherished memories that have defined my time here. Through these experiences, I've learned a valuable lesson: to appreciate what you have while you still have it.
While school life may seem tough at times, these are the days we'll look back on with nostalgia, wishing you could relive them. They are the moments that shape us and teach us things no classroom ever can. However, I have also learned a lot in the classroom. The teachers and classmates have been super kind and I want to thank all of you for making this such an amazing experience.
