Carlotta Bruno from Italy

Hello, my name is Carlotta Bruno. I’m from Italy and I spent an unforgettable three months in New Zealand.

Since I started high school in Italy, I wondered to do some experience abroad, I would try to live in a different country for some months, curious to know the differences from what I’m used to in Italy. Choosing to come to New Zealand was a significant decision for me. I knew that moving here meant continuing my education while skipping my summer holiday back home. Despite that, I can proudly say that I have no regrets and am very happy with the choice I made.

I start school in the middle of the second term, I chose subjects like Biology, English, Media Studies, Outdoor Education and Art Photography. I wanted to explore different areas from what I was used to studying in Italy, aiming to enrich my experience and enjoy it to the fullest. Initially, I felt a bit lost because the school was much larger compared to the one I was used in Italy, so if you experience the same feeling, don’t worry. Fortunately, there were many people ready to help from the very first day. I really appreciated the support from students who showed me around the school. This experience motivated me to give back, when new international students arrived at the beginning of the third term, I took the opportunity to show them around, knowing how much it helped me the previous month.

One of the aspects I enjoyed most about the school was its vibrant and active environment, filled with various activities, trips and extra-curricular courses. I had a great time on a high ropes course, explored the fascinating Tiritiri Matangi Island, and enjoyed three fantastic days of biking in Rotorua.

Even though my stay was just three months, I’m delighted for the chance to visit a lot of places in New Zealand, this thanks also at my host family that kindly showed me nice places. During the school break I joined a South Island trip with Kiwiana Tours, which was an amazing opportunity to experience the diverse beauty of New Zealand’s southern half. The landscape was completely different from those in the north. I saw stunning views, star-studded skies, pristine beach and forest with fresh and pure air. It looks like a real terrestrial paradise. I really advice you to do this trip.

These experiences have given me a fresh perspective and broadened my horizons. I’ve come to understand what truly matters to me and what is important in life, embracing new experiences and emotions. As my time came to an end, I found myself wanting to fully immerse in the moments with my friends and host family, enjoying every interaction without the distraction of my phone. I wanted to relish the time spent with them to the fullest. I encourage you to adopt this mindset from the beginning of your experiences, or better yet, in every day of your life, just enjoy the moment, just do it!

I’m grateful to the international department for their support, to my host family for making me feel at home and involving me in their life and to my friends who made this journey unforgettable.
